Water for Life (Kampong Speu) project is a partnership between the SIF, SSF and Ngee Ann Development. It covers overs 16 villages in 2 districts of Kampong Speu. The 3-year project ends March 31, 2016 and will likely be duplicated in another target area of the province if there is a new donor is on board. The project locally is run in collaboration with Village Development Committees (VDCs) and provincial authorities. They work directly with SSF. The extensive training they have received enhances the capacity of the committee to improve water and sanitation throughout the commune.
The Water for Life provides bio-sand filters, water wells and latrines, as well as education on first aid, financial literacy, hygienes and sanitation. The hygiene focuses particularly on hadndwash, oral , feminine and infectious diseases. It has resulted in a dramatic decline in the incidence of water-borne illnesses, such as diarrhoea and typhoid, in the target villages. At the same time, wells are providing vulnerable households with water for home gardens. This saves them the cost of having to buy vegetables and creates the opportunity for them to generate income by selling their produce.
Education has been key to the project’s success. SSF staff, its founding director and specialist volunteers from SIF conduct intensive training at all social levels: from individual households, health clinics, village committees and Commune Councils to all primary and secondary schools in the districts.by
